Other than the Casinos what is there to see in Macau? Here are some suggestions on some places worth a visit.

Macau

Tucked away just a few hours from Hong Kong, and hanging on the south of China lies quiet peaceful Macau. At least that’s what it used to known as. Recently many massive flashy buildings have been popping up everywhere. These massive flashy buildings are known as Casinos. Changing the face of Macau they are attracting more and more visitors to this Vegas of Asia. There are those however, still interested in the slower pace of life Macau use to offer as well as the history of this east meets west city. So what is there to see in Macau anyway? Other than St. Paul’s facade, the Protestant Cemetery, and of course the casinos is there more to Macau? Yes, there is.

First and foremost, where all tourists are guaranteed to venture is Largo do Senado, known locally as “The Center” or “Samalo” (the Chinese name for the street). There you will find a couple of alleys running off the main streets. There are some Portuguese restaurants, as well an Italian cafe down one of those alley ways. It is lined with Portuguese styled architecture, many Chinese shops and some Portuguese shops.

Hac Sa Beach - Hac Sa means black sand, and that it is. At first glance the sand may not necessary look like a black sand beach, because the sand just looks a little dark. But after swimming you will notice your swimsuit turning a significantly darker colour, this is due the the black sand that covers the beach. The water is relatively clean and is located on the furthest Island, Coloane. There is a wonderful unassuming Portuguese restaurant located where the parking lot ends and the beach continues. It is called “Fernando's” and if you aren’t looking, you are very likely to miss it. Delicious salted cod, grilled chicken, fresh salad and refreshing Sangria await you!

Fisherman’s Wharf - Though this is a recent addition and has come to be owing to the casinos nearby, it is a wonderful place to spend the evening. The architecture is a mix of all styles and cultures ranging from the Mayan Empire to the Art Deco to Grecian Architecture. Therefore it is a popular place for newlyweds to have their photos taken with the movie set like backdrop. Cafes and Restaurants of many different sorts and some live entertainment can be enjoyed for a relaxing evening.

Rua de Felicidade - Located not far from the Center (in fact, it’s just across the street) is the former red light district and was then named the Happiness Street. Much uniquely Chinese architecture and Chinese culture can be seen here. If you’re brave try the famous Almond cookies left out in the sun with flies swarming around. There are many restaurants, convenience stores, guests houses and much more.

Therefore if you find yourself yearning to explore something a little different from everything, and something that has a bit of everything, Macau is the ideal choice.
